


Dr. Nicholas Hedlund, is a visionary philosopher working at the nexus of philosophy of science, worldviews, and socioecological transformation.
He received his PhD in philosophy and social sciences from University College London, studying under the philosopher Roy Bhaskar. Nicholas holds a master’s degree in philosophy and religion (with a concentration in philosophy, cosmology and consciousness) from the California Institute of Integral Studies, as well as one in integral psychology from John F. Kennedy University. He recieved his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he graduated summa cum laude, with distinction. He is director of Eudaimonia Institute, an emerging social innovations lab for planetary flourishing. Nicholas’s books include Metatheory for the 21st- Century: Critical Realism and Integral Theory in Dialogue and Big Picture Perspectives for Planetary Flourishing: Metatheory for the Anthropocence Volume 1. He is currently working on three books: A New Vision of the Real: Metatheory in a Time of Metacrisis (SUNY Press); Integrative Responses to the Global Metacrisis: Metatheory for the Anthropocene Volume 2 (Routledge); and Metacrisis: A Tapestry of Perspectives on the Greatest Challenge of our Time. He was an exchange scholar at Yale University, director of the Integral Research Center, organizer of the Critical Realism & Integral Theory Symposia Series, and organizer of both the Integral Theory and Critical Realism Conferences. His writings have appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals and anthologies. He teaches in the Integral Noetic Sciences Program at the California Institute for Human Science. His work aims to help address the root causes of the metacrisis by articulating new possibilities for sensemaking and meaning-making.
